Diabetes Retinopathy

Diabetes is a disease that can lead to many physical problems, including eyesight problems. Untreated diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness among adults. Unfortunately, this is often a ‘silent’ condition that does not have any symptoms in the early stages of the disease.

Diabetic retinopathy causes abnormalities in the tiny blood vessels that nourish the retina (the back of the eye) and the macula (the center of the retina). If these blood vessels deteriorate or swell, they will begin to leak fluid and blood. New blood vessels can also begin to grow on the retina. When the retina or macula becomes damaged, vision loss occurs.  Early diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy can prevent visual loss and blindness. That’s why eye exams at least once a year are recommended.

Regular eye exams are vital to protect against the progression of diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Kurteeva will work closely with your primary care physician and your endocrinologist to prevent diabetic damage.
