Cataract Surgery Center

in Newport Beach, CA

Introduction to Service

When you have your cataract surgery with Dr. Kurteeva in Newport Beach, you will have a variety of options that can help you achieve your desired result. The actual removal of the cataract affected lens is only part of the cataract surgery process. During your Cataract Consultation, Dr. Kurteeva and our staff will meet with you to discuss the goals you have for your vision after surgery.

We will ask questions about your hobbies and lifestyle to help determine how cataract surgery might improve your quality of life. All of this information will be combined with facts about any previous vision conditions you had before cataracts, such as presbyopia (the need for reading glasses), astigmatism, retinal problems or glaucoma.

What to Expect During Your Cataract Surgery in Newport Beach, CA

  • Dr. Kurteeva will see you and make sure you are comfortable before your surgery.

  • If you have chosen to have the laser used as part of the surgery, you will be moved to the laser room before being taken into the operating room.

  • If you have chosen not to have the laser involved, you will be moved to the operating room.

  • Once you arrive in the operating room, Dr. Kurteeva will make sure you are comfortable and a local anesthesia will be administered.

  • The area around your eye will be cleaned and a sterile drape applied.

  • The cataract lens is removed and the replacement Intraocular Lens (IOL) is folded, inserted and unfolded in the eye.

  • The Optiwave® Refractive Analysis (ORA) may be incorporated prior to lens insertion to assist in the determination of the power of lens implant.

  • A protective shield will be placed over your eye before you leave the operating room.

Most patients experience little or no discomfort during the procedure and can return to their normal activities the next day. If you have cataracts in both eyes, the second cataract surgery will be scheduled after the first eye has fully healed, usually about two weeks after the first surgery.

Available Advanced Technology Options Available for You

Custom Cataract Surgery with ORA Technology

Dr. Kurteeva incorporates ORA technology in both traditional and laser-based cataract surgery procedures. After the cataract is removed Dr. Kurteeva, has access to real-time refractive analysis of your eye to tailor the choice of lens implant power. The result is a reduced dependence on glasses because he can:

  • Measure the true refractive power of your eye

  • Select the appropriate power for your lens implant

  • Reduce the need for re-treatments

Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery

  • A unique surgical plan is developed to your individual eye characteristics for truly customized treatment.

  • During surgery Dr. Kurteeva guides the femtosecond laser using real-time 3D visualization to make a precise opening in the cloudy lens.

  • The CATALYS laser pulses gently soften the cataract and break it into small pieces for removal in the operating room.

  • A femtosecond laser can be used to make incisions in the cornea, open the lens capsule and break the cataract into pieces. The pieces then must be removed by hand with the same phacoemulsification instrument used in regular cataract surgery

  • Publications of many large series have shown that the post operative results of cataract surgery are the same whether the surgery is all done by hand or part by the laser
